Powder Coating Ovens

Powder Coating Ovens OvenPowder Coating Ovens are used to cure powder coating finishes, typically in a range between 180°C to 210°C though we do manufacture Powder Coating Ovens outside of this range.

Powder coating is a method of applying both a decorative and, protective finish to a wide range of substrates in both industrial and consumer sectors.

The powder used for this process is a mixture of finely ground particles of pigment and resin, which is applied to the substrate by electrostatic charge to hold the finish to its applied surface. Where, the charged particles adhere to the applied surface when heat is applied to fuse the powder to the substrate.

Properly cured, the result is a hard and relatively abrasion-resistant tough finish which is superior to wet-sprayed finishes. This includes arduous architectural applications to provide a finish which, when correctly applied and cured, will not crack, chip or peel as other forms of painted finish.

Powder paint finishes include:

  • Epoxy - Superior mechanical and corrosion resistance
  • Polyester
  • Epoxy Poly - Most suitable for decorative and anti-corrosive applications
  • Low Bake Polyester - To provide exceptional gloss and colour retention
  • Textures
  • Metallic's
  • Hammers
  • Anti Microbial
  • Lacquers
  • Leatherette

The finish is environmentally friendly, as the process emits negligible levels of VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds), unlike those required of wet-sprayed finishes.

Relevant Health & Safety Executive 'Good Practice Guides' include:

  • GG50 - Cost-effective paint and powder coating: Materials management
  • GG52 - Cost-effective paint and powder coating: Coatings materials
  • GG53 - Cost-effective paint and powder coating: Application technology

Unlike wet paint, and with the correct ventilation equipment, the overspray of powder finishes can be collected and re-used.

Options of Powder Coating Ovens include

Air re-circulating type Powder Coating Ovens - Where, air from a heat source (usually gas or electric) is fan-assisted into the Oven chamber:

  • Box Ovens - floor-mounted chamber with either hinged doors or a vertical rising door within the front face
  • Shuttle Ovens - As Box Ovens but, incorporating doors at either end of the Oven to allow the loading of products through one set of doors and, their removal from the second set of doors
  • Tunnel Ovens - Ovens that encapsulate a straight section (only) of a powered overhead conveyor circuit
  • Multi-pass Ovens - As Tunnel Ovens but, where the Oven encapsulates multiple sections of conveyor they are formed into loops within the Oven chamber

Radiant Heat Type Powder Coating Ovens:

  • Tunnel Ovens that incorporate either gas or, electrically-heated infra red panels

The main advantage of air re-circulating Ovens over radiant ovens is that heated air passes through all coated substrates, regardless of section. Whereas, infra red waves concentrate to towards substrate surfaces that face the radiant heat source only and, it is more difficult for waves to seek out any substrate cross section or hidden surface. This very often results in the discolouration of outer substrate surfaces and, uncured powder in sectional areas of the substrate.
